No teeth? No problem. From infancy on, everyone needs an annual dental exam

Fredericton, NB - April 1, 2010 - If you have teeth, you know you should see a dentist every six months. But, if you don't have teeth, do you still need to go? Yes!

Everyone needs an annual dental exam from infancy on. As soon as you can see an infant's first tooth (usually in the latter half of the first year), your baby should visit the dentist. Even if no teeth are present by baby's first birthday, take your child to the dentist anyway.

"Children with a healthy mouth and teeth chew their food easily and smile with confidence," said Dr. Daniel Violette, President of the NB Dental Society. "This early dental visit checks to ensure that your child's facial and dental development are normal to this point, helps to establish good home oral health care techniques and gets the child used to visiting the dentist's office. Your child can have fun having his or her teeth looked at while getting to know, and feel comfortable with, the dental team."

Assuming that "they're only baby teeth that will fall out anyway" and waiting to take your child to the dentist for a few more years may actually cost you more money in the long run. Baby teeth are the place holders for permanent teeth and they need to be properly cared for and maintained. Parents who wait until a child is 4 or 5 years old for that first dental visit may end up spending more on dental care in the future than those who started their babies off with good oral health care by age one.

Adults who, for various reasons, have had their teeth removed also need to visit the dentist annually. Dentists not only look at teeth, but examine all of the tissues in and around your mouth.

You need to see your dentist even if you don't have teeth!
